A charter school in a neighborhood in Baltimore, CNH already had a thriving and meaningful school culture, which prioritized and supported it’s students first and foremost. This project took a look at work through the lens of the pandemic. ︎ Center for Social Design︎ MICA Staff Empowerment Council︎ Design Research, Design Strategy︎ January - May 2022 Credits:Partners:&nbsp;MICA Staff Empowerment Council (SEC) &amp; MICA Staff Union Organizers Instructors:&nbsp;Thomas Gardner &amp; Pickett Slater Harrington At any college or university, staff members are the invisible laborers holding the ship together. These are the Staff, those not formally teaching students. During my time at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), the staff had just begun a process of unionizing, which suggests a lack of trust between employer and employee was happening at MICA. This research project about how we can rethink work and consider how to better support staff, turned into an intervention of its own. A curiosity about how the pandemic has shaped work turned into a process of student advocacy. The Process Over the course of several months, I interviewed twenty (20) Staff and Administrative members of MICA and surveyed thirty-four (34) respondents. I synthesized themes, developed personas, and a framework for how decision-making was perceived at MICA. Next, I held two (2) co-creation sessions, wherein staff chose which opportunities to ideate on, and then I rapid-prototyped four (4) possible interventions and offered as much data as possible to the Staff and MICA Leadership. A huge goal of the project was data-equity, the sharing of information without the fear of retaliation. I shared my 82 page publication with staff and admin, and I invited participants and the president of the college to my final thesis presentation.&nbsp; Design Principles Prioritize Staff Needs&nbsp;︎At a college that put Staff last, these designs should put them as first priority Redistribute Power&nbsp;︎ Power is hierarchical at MICA. These power structures should be reconsidered/ dismantled Center Equity&nbsp;︎The diverse needs of staff in their diverse jobs, their diverse backgrounds, their diverse lives Keep it Relational&nbsp;︎Maintain what makes MICA great by not making it too formal or too robotic Increase Transparency&nbsp;︎ Quality communication vertically and horizontally will ultimately make MICA a better workplace Avoid Adding More Work ︎ Avoid the addition of more work for staff members as many as already at or beyond capacity Problem Analysis Problem Definition&nbsp;Staff are undervalued and overworked in colleges, especially MICA, because focus tends to go to students and faculty. PrEP is a preventative for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection, a virus and associated disease which holds a lot of stigma. The six-month long project focused on how we could design with and for both the PrEP providers and patients. ︎ Baltimore City Health Department︎ Center for Social Design︎ Design Research, Service Design︎ August - December 2021 How might we support BCHD Sexual Health providers and patients with PrEP Initiation? To start, we considered equity centered community design practices and set intentions for our process. We then researched PrEP’s history and science as well as access and barriers to it in Baltimore. We looked into medical mistrust in Baltimore, the LGTBQIA community, and the Black community as they were key communities in the primary patient population.Then, we went through the draft PrEP Protocol, and we created flow charts to better understand the process. Prototyping &amp; Implementation We prototyped several of the ideas and, as a team, gave feedback to each other and narrowed down our prototypes. From there we made higher fidelity prototypes and shared them with BCHD staff and patients. They gave us feedback which led us to refine our prototypes. We returned to get more feedback as well as conducted user-testing. A charter school in a neighborhood in Baltimore, CNH already had a thriving and meaningful school culture, which prioritized and supported it’s students first and foremost. However, over the course of the pandemic, some of what had made CNH great was starting to fray. Our class was asked to break into four teams to focus on four constituents to explore how this school culture could be improved. My team was focused on the Board. ︎ City Neighbors Hamilton ︎ Center for Social Design ︎ Design Research, Design Strategy ︎ September - October 2021 What does it mean to “CNH” for the Board? Research After being introduced to the project, our teams visited the school. We were allowed to walk the whole property, observe classrooms, and be immersed in the space. We met many smiling faces and people overall encouraged to be talking with us. We loosely followed a schedule of planned interviews and spoke with various teachers, administration, and a teacher liaison for the board. Our group attended a board meeting and scheduled interviews with board members in small groups. We recognized several patterns and began writing insights and opportunities for three of them. Opportunities ︎ How might we better integrate and live out our DEI goals within the CNH culture? ︎ How might we reconnect parents to the heart of CNH culture within the realities of Covid-19? ︎ How might we restructure systems of support and communications to value all staff while remaining student centered? Ideation We then went around and brainstormed as teams for each group’s opportunity questions. We worked to develop a diversity of ideas, and then we collated those ideas into groups. Prototyping &amp; Implementation We focused on the HMW which felt most relevant and chose three ideas, one for each of our team to develop a low-fidelity prototype. We met with designers from the other teams to discuss them and get feedback. How might we reconnect parents to the heart of CNH culture within the realities of COVID-19? We then went back to CNH to discuss our ideas with those in the community. Each of our ideas developed dramatically throughout the day as we spoke to each person. For example, we discussed the prospect of having an outdoor space for parents and board members to meet. While there, a staff member recommended an unused area which could also combine our other idea of a community garden, and a few teachers remarked how the space would fulfill a need for an outdoor eating space for them to eat lunch away from the kids. We further tested our prototypes in a Zoom meeting with board members and got more insights on how they could be improved. From there, we developed higher-fidelity prototypes. The timeline demarcates key victories and successes in the campaign to advocate for migrant worker’s rights over gender discrimination. ︎ Centro De Los Derechos del Migrante, Inc. ︎ Grassroots Designfest ︎ Copywriting, UX Design, UI Design ︎ September - October 2021 Design Challenge CDM was looking for a timeline that includes everything CDM has done around NAFTA and USMCA in order to use the mechanisms within these agreements to advance migrant worker justice. They wanted this timeline to show their efforts and successes, filings and complaints by migrant workers, etc. as well as the halts along the way. They ideally wanted a (an interactive, if possible) design to feature in their website, in both English and Spanish (potentially other indigenous languages), and as an image/one pager that they can use in social media and other CDM communications materials. Our Process To start, our team identified the ask, pulled out insights and goals from the organization, and asked key questions to the stakeholders to understand what they needed. From there we assigned roles and prepared for the next phase. One for print and one for their website. We got to work designing wireframes for the website. We made a few versions and continued to define the style that would make sense. Collectively, we liked a more horizontal style for the print format. While I worked to develop new headers and summaries for the copy, one of our team members worked to make icons developed for each kind of item on the timeline. Shareback Our final web design featured interactivity and the print page featured a faded yellow design meant to signify hope into the future. We also developed a branding guide for ease of transition. In March, America went into shutdown. Most of us worked from home, were discouraged from leaving our home to go to any social places, and to wear masks when we did go out. Many people got sick, many died, many gained long-term symptoms, and most of us suffered from impending fear, loneliness, and isolation. To survive that time, I turned to nature and I turned to art. I filmed myself collecting local plants, moss, rocks, and fungi from my backyard and from walks in my neighborhood. I would collect my materials and set them up on my table, assembling them to set a scene. I would use natural light as they quickly wilted and grew frail. It was an exercise in mortality, in joy, and, through social media, in connectedness. These photos helped me to find peace and connection with my fellow humans and with nature. home city, and to honor the land itself. It was created as apart of a class exploring how we can decolonize design.&nbsp; It was exhibited alongside other land acknowledgements at the Maryland Institute College of Art.&nbsp; ︎ Decolonize Design Course︎ Fiber︎ March 2022 The central idea of this piece was to show the vulnerability and depth of the ground as well as the value of all life, even that of lichen and mosses. It shows our relationship with water and the the way it connects and provides for the land and us. The hidden underbelly of the piece was meant to reference painted turtles, a native creature whose under-shell reveals a red and black rorschach design. It symbolizes the indigenous peoples of the Lenape nation who have continued to live on and steward this land, often in secret. I, as a dweller and settler of this land, acknowledge the broken promises of the past, that of the Walking Purchase and of the forced removal of the Lenape people for over 250 years.
